A practical buy framework

When is an understandable thesis attractive at the price?

What you will learn and prerequisites

Read first: Understand the business

A buy framework combines business quality, valuation, survival, portfolio capacity and a reason to act. It does not turn a checklist into certainty. Passing is a valid result.

Separate liking the business from liking its risk-adjusted economics at the proposed price and size.

Understand the mechanism

A lower quote can improve a bargain or reflect information that reduced value even more. Update both price and assumptions. Technical structure may help timing for some approaches but does not repair a flawed business case.

Long-horizon ownership and short-horizon options need different timing justifications.

Walk through the process

Write adverse, base and favorable scenarios with supporting evidence. Decide risk size and alternatives rather than using conviction as a substitute for capital discipline. Staged entries can reduce dependence on one price, not guarantee protection.

The hypothetical comparisons here are educational, not individual recommendations.

Evidence and decision boundary

These are original fictional teaching figures, not a company screen. Actual analysis should use primary disclosures and distinguish management's explanation from your inference. Favorable or unfavorable evidence depends on the specific business, valuation and risk; no single ratio establishes a recommendation.

A worked example

Independent fictional values are 25 adverse, 40 base and 55 favorable. At market price 50, a favorable result is already needed; at 30 the base case offers more room if assumptions remain intact.

The valuation case is more favorable at 30 on these limited facts. That does not make 30 safe: even the 25 adverse estimate can be too optimistic. The chart uses no invented probabilities.

What would invalidate the reading?

Buying below an old target without updating adverse information can increase exposure to a broken thesis. Averaging down is not automatically disciplined.

Check your understanding

Try the question before revealing its answer. These are reading checks, not trading certification or a site completion record.

Why is the same 40 base case less attractive at 50 than at 30?

Reveal the worked answer

The higher price requires outcomes above the base case.

All else equal is essential.

Critical risk question

What is the critical failure to avoid?

Reveal the worked answer

Buying below an old target without updating adverse information can increase exposure to a broken thesis. Averaging down is not automatically disciplined.

Explain this risk before treating the example as a decision rule. A correct calculation does not guarantee a favorable market outcome.

Takeaway

Return to the question: When is an understandable thesis attractive at the price? State the observed facts, the assumptions and the failure condition separately.
