Market structure comes first

Is the market trending, balancing or changing character?

One concept per page · original written lesson · 331 prose words · authored, not installed or production-approved

What you will learn and prerequisites

Start with the sequence of swings, not the color of the last candle. A daily uptrend can contain a five-minute range. Name the timeframe and observed state before assigning a broad bullish or bearish label.

Understand the mechanism

Higher meaningful highs and lows describe an uptrend; lower highs and lows describe a downtrend. Repeated overlap without durable progress describes balance. Meaningful swings need a rule selected before the outcome: bar interval, swing distance or another reproducible convention. Structure does not identify trader intent or guarantee future defense of a level.

Walk through the process

Mark the last two confirmed highs and lows on a context timeframe, then examine the execution timeframe. Specify the observation that would challenge continuation. Do not change timeframe merely to rescue a failed thesis. Waiting is valid when the structure is ambiguous.

Pause before deciding

Describe what the example actually establishes and what remains unknown. A technical observation supplies context, not an automatic options entry. Contract cost, horizon, liquidity and the consequence of failure still need to match the thesis. Record the contrary branch so a named pattern cannot become an excuse to ignore new evidence.

A worked example

The fictional sequence 100→104→102→107→105→110 makes higher highs and higher lows. A later close at 104 breaks the latest 105 higher low. That changes the continuation description, but does not prove a complete bear market. A reclaim of 105 and further acceptance would tell a different story from continued trade below it.

What would invalidate the reading?

Redrawing swings after losses makes every chart look explanatory. A one-minute failure also should not silently become a daily reversal claim.

Check your understanding

Try the question before revealing its answer. These are reading checks, not trading certification or a site completion record.

What changes when the sequence next closes at 104?

Reveal the worked answer

The latest higher low at 105 is broken.

A structural warning is not a guaranteed reversal.

Critical risk question

What is the critical failure to avoid?

Reveal the worked answer

Redrawing swings after losses makes every chart look explanatory. A one-minute failure also should not silently become a daily reversal claim.

Explain this risk before treating the example as a decision rule. A correct calculation does not guarantee a favorable market outcome.

Takeaway

Return to the question: Is the market trending, balancing or changing character? State the observed facts, the assumptions and the failure condition separately.
