# Trend continuation patterns **TA-03 · Technical Analysis · Core** **Lesson question:** What makes a pullback constructive? Original fictional examples; educational writing, not live market data, orders or production approval. ## By the end - Explain the mechanism in the lesson question. - Reproduce the worked comparison and recognize its failure case. **Prerequisites:** TA-01 Flags and pullbacks describe pauses within a trend. They are not continuation guarantees. The useful comparison is the prior impulse, the correction and the subsequent attempt to leave the pause. ## Understand the mechanism A forceful rise followed by a shallower overlapping correction can preserve bullish structure. The bearish mirror reverses the signs. A boundary break is not durable acceptance: the first trade outside can immediately fail. Neither a fixed retracement percentage nor a pattern name supplies an edge by itself. ## Walk through the process Measure impulse distance, retracement and duration with a fixed rule. State trigger, invalidation and the next obstacle before the next bar. Compare actual entry economics with the planned ones; chasing changes the reward/risk geometry. ## Pause before deciding Describe what the example actually establishes and what remains unknown. A technical observation supplies context, not an automatic options entry. Contract cost, horizon, liquidity and the consequence of failure still need to match the thesis. Record the contrary branch so a named pattern cannot become an excuse to ignore new evidence. ## A worked example QLT rises 100→110, pulls back to 107 and later closes 111. The correction is 3/10=30%. A retest holding 110 supports one continuation branch; a close below the corrective low supports failure. Thirty percent describes the example, not a universal buying threshold. ## Graph: Trend continuation patterns—worked comparison **Horizontal:** Swing observation **Vertical:** Spot (USD) Fictional data from the written example. The chart organizes the comparison; its shape is not a forecast. Complete numerical data are embedded in `scripts/technical-analysis/TA-03.js` and displayed as an accessible table in the HTML lesson. ## What would invalidate the reading? A clean-looking flag immediately beneath a major obstacle may offer little room. Ignoring a worse fill can turn a plausible chart pattern into poor economics. ## Check your understanding ### What fraction of the ten-point advance was retraced? **Answer:** 30%. **Why:** Three points divided by ten. ### What is the critical failure to avoid? **Answer:** A clean-looking flag immediately beneath a major obstacle may offer little room. Ignoring a worse fill can turn a plausible chart pattern into poor economics. **Why:** Explain this risk before treating the example as a decision rule. A correct calculation does not guarantee a favorable market outcome. **Critical risk check.** ## Takeaway Return to the question: What makes a pullback constructive? State the observed facts, the assumptions and the failure condition separately. ## References and provenance The cited references support definitions and conventions.
